I can do a passable G and trying to master C, D is not so bad....

The first chords I ever learned were the G, C and E minor. The D I taught myself after looking at chord charts on chordie.com, and remembered how to do it, mnemonically, because the shape you make with your fingers on the fretboard actually resembles the letter D.
Keep it up, girl. Pretty soon there won't be a Blown Eye who won't know know how to pick up and play a git-fiddle.
